Where I said "retired" should say "former." A 2010 amendment to the law expanded coverage to federal government officers and agents, cut the service time requirement from 15 years to 10 and replaced the word "retired" with the word "separated."

If you were a federal agent, a state, county or municipal cop, or an Amtrack cop with at least 10 years on the job and didn't leave while assigned to the rubber gun squad, you're good to go. Get ahold of your last employing agency, get an ID card, go through their prescribed on-duty FA qualification and you're good to go.

Having a gun and knowing how to use it is just as important as carrying a fire extinguisher and a spare tire in your rig and knowing what to do with those. It's a matter of being prepared, not wanting an occasion to use them.

To the folks with bear spray and such who feel safer by having it... good luck with that in the checkout line at a store when some knucklehead comes in to rob the place.

I know there are some retired LEOs who read these types of blogs and, in case they may not know, there's a federal law that makes it legal for y'all to carry concealed in all 50, including the Peoples Republic of Illinois.

Hi Bob, Nah, no worries there! We actually practice both at the range and run drills in the van on safe handling and strategy to deal with various scenarios. We are very safe with out methods and equipment. Of course, the late night relief issue doesn't fit with us anyway, we have indoor plumbing :) We are both actually pretty decent shots too, if I do say so myself.

Hey Michael, Couldn't tell ya on the stats. I am sure there could be, but I don't quite know how you would quantify it. There are tons of news stories even on our local news where CPL holders have defended themselves successfully in life or death situations so I would expect they would consider themselves safer. Mace or any spray, is not something I can risk with CF. The Mayhem I mentioned above is just some of the stuff I have dealt with in several places I have lived over the years both urban and rural in both Minnesota and Washington. There was quite a few more examples I could have come up with too. I would rather have a firearm and not need it than need it and not have it. Personal defense is just one of the reasons we have firearms.

Are there stats on CHL Holders being safer? Such as the success rate of averting problems. I heard a commenter on Glenn's blog say a big can of mace gave them a good sense of security. I've got Grizzly Bear Spray that fit's the bill. Mike, where were you living when all this mayhem happened?

Since we have had the guns, there hasn't been a need and I seriously hope we never do need them. Of course the best and expected outcome is that we will never have to use them, but are prepared if we do. There have been many times in my life where the need could have been there with just a small change in circumstance. I have been within ear shot of 2 murders in my life(was the 911 caller for one of them). Had to jump out a second story window at 4 in the morning thanks to an arsonist, found out my neighbor was raped right outside my door. Had 2 people in one week attempt to car jack me(drive with your doors locked). Things happen. Being prepared is wise IMO.
